Broncos Wide Receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who was just
named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 7 performance held his second
annual A Night to Catch Flight fundraising event on Monday evening. This
exclusive celebrity gala featured Sanders and several of his Broncos teammates
including Demaryius Thomas stepping out into the community to help raise money for
the Emmanuel Sanders Foundation.
Held at the thrilling Wings Over the Rockies
Air and Space Museum, the more than 120 attendees at the event were treated to
a pre-event cocktail reception sponsored by 5280 Magazine and a three-course
dinner. Wings Over the Rockies is built on the former Lowry Air Force Base and
presents sensational aircraft, space, and rocketry exhibits. Sanders spent the
evening mingling with his guests while speaking at length about the importance
of his foundation’s community outreach, which provides sports equipment to
underprivileged youth.
In addition to the cocktail reception and dinner,
guests were also treated to live and silent auctions, which featured rare and
exciting items. The event was successful in raising over $136,000. Sanders
himself presented a $20,000 check to his foundation during the event. These
proceeds will go on to support the Emmanuel Sanders Foundation’s ongoing
community outreach programs, chiefly Emmanuel’s Lockers.
Emmanuel’s Locker is the signature program of the
Emmanuel Sanders Foundation. The lockers are installed within Title I schools
and provide low-income students access to sports equipment. The program ensures
that these children can participate in youth sports alongside their “better
off” peers and gain the important skills and fundamentals that sports offer,
such as teamwork, discipline, dedication, and physical exercise. The inaugural
Emmanuel’s Lockers were unveiled in April at Denver’s Kepner Beacon Middle
School, distributing equipment to more than 250 eligible students.
Emmanuel himself grew up in a low-income household in
Texas, and the opportunity to play sports was not always made available to him.
When he did receive this opportunity, he utilized sports as a way to develop
his character, establish key mentorships, and formulate a desire to succeed.
These experiences helped Emmanuel forge a successful life on and off the
football field, and his foundation allows him to provide these same
opportunities to youth who come from similar backgrounds. The success of A
Night to Catch Flight presents Sanders and his Foundation with a chance to
continue providing this impact to low-income students in Greater Denver.
